Marathi Isn’t One Thing — Regions and Dialects
If a group feels unfamiliar even though it’s in Marathi, this is usually why. Maharashtra’s regions speak noticeably differently:
- Konkan — the coastal strip from Mumbai south to Sindhudurg. Malvani is spoken in the southern districts and is distinct enough that speakers elsewhere sometimes struggle with it.
- Western Maharashtra — Pune, Satara, Kolhapur, Sangli. Puneri Marathi is closest to the standard written form taught in schools.
- Marathwada — Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Nanded, Latur. Carries noticeable Dakhni and Urdu influence.
- Vidarbha — Nagpur, Amravati, Akola. Varhadi is spoken here, with vocabulary that surprises people from the west of the state.
- Khandesh — Jalgaon, Dhule, Nandurbar, where Ahirani is widely spoken.
None of these is “wrong Marathi”. If you’re learning, aim for the standard form first — it’s understood everywhere — then pick up the local variety wherever you actually live.
Learning Marathi Through Group Chat

- Start by reading, not posting. A week of just following the conversation teaches you more than a month of vocabulary lists.
