Before You Forward It
WhatsApp misinformation in India has caused real harm — lynchings triggered by fabricated child-kidnapping rumours, panic during floods and communal violence sparked by miscaptioned videos. Most of it is spread by ordinary people who believed it. A few habits stop that:
- Look for the “Forwarded many times” label. WhatsApp marks messages that have travelled through five or more chats. That label is not a sign of importance — it is a sign the message has been circulating unchecked, and those messages can only be forwarded to one chat at a time for exactly that reason.
- Check whether any news outlet is reporting it. If something genuinely major happened, mainstream media will have it within minutes. If nobody is reporting it, that is the answer.
- Old videos get recycled with new captions. This is the single most common technique — real footage from a different year, country or context. Reverse image search a screenshot before believing a clip.
- Screenshots of news headlines are trivially faked. Go to the outlet’s own site and look for the story rather than trusting the image.
- Government notices circulate in fake versions constantly — scheme announcements, rule changes, holiday declarations. PIB Fact Check exists specifically to verify these, and it is free to use.
- Be most sceptical of what you most want to believe. Messages that make you angry or triumphant are engineered to be forwarded, and that is why they reached you.
- “Forward to ten people” is always a lie. No genuine news requires you to redistribute it.

What a Good News Group Looks Like
- It cites sources. Posts link to the outlet rather than pasting screenshots or unattributed text.
- Admins issue corrections. A group that never corrects anything is not being careful; it is just not checking.
- It is announcement-only or lightly moderated. Open news groups tend to collapse into political argument.
- It stays on topic. If job posts, offers and investment schemes start appearing, the group has been repurposed.
- It does not deal in “exclusive leaks”. Groups promising information the media supposedly won’t report are the ones most likely to be inventing it.
Staying Safe
- Your number is visible to every member of any group you join.
- Political news groups get heated. Mute rather than argue, and leave if a group turns communal — resharing that content can carry legal consequences.
- Don’t reshare images of accidents, violence or victims. Beyond the distress caused, sharing identifying material about victims can be unlawful.
- Ignore investment and earning posts that appear in news groups — they are the most common way these groups get monetised by bad actors.
- Report fraud on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal or by calling 1930.
