Indian internships fall into roughly four categories, and they’re not equally worth your time:
- Paid internships with a stipend. Real work, real supervision, and the strongest signal on a CV.
- Unpaid but substantive. Common in startups, NGOs, media and research. Worth doing if you get an actual project and a named mentor, particularly for a first internship.
- Academic-requirement placements. Engineering and management programmes require internships for credit. Your college’s placement cell is usually a better route than an open group.
- Certificate-only “internships”. No supervision, no project, sometimes a fee. These are worth nothing and recruiters recognise them instantly.
Internship Scams: The One to Watch For
There is a substantial industry in India selling internship certificates to students, and it targets engineering and management undergraduates who need a placement for credit. The pattern:
- You should never pay to work. Registration fees, “training charges”, certificate fees, kit costs or refundable deposits attached to an internship are all fraud, however professionally the offer is worded.
- “Guaranteed certificate in 15 days” with no interview, no mentor and no defined project is a certificate mill.
- Be wary of stipends conditional on recruiting others. “Refer five friends to unlock your stipend” is MLM wearing an internship label.
- Unpaid sales roles branded as internships — commission-only field sales dressed up as a “marketing internship” — are common. Ask exactly what you’d be doing all day.
- Check the company exists — a working website, a registered address, an MCA listing, real employees on LinkedIn.
- Confirm mentorship in writing: who supervises you, what the project is, and what deliverable you’ll produce.
- Never share Aadhaar, PAN, bank details or original certificates with an unverified “HR” contact.
- Report fraud on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal or by calling 1930.
Making an Internship Count
- Get a defined deliverable — something you built, wrote, analysed or shipped. “Assisted the team” reads as nothing.
- Ask for a letter of recommendation at the end, from a named person with a designation. Worth more than the certificate.
- Keep evidence of your work — code, designs, a report — for your portfolio, within whatever confidentiality applies.
- Two solid internships beat six certificates. Depth is what gets discussed at interview.
- Apply through the company’s careers page where possible, using the group posting only as the alert.
