Every Route Into an IIT
JEE Advanced is the best-known entry, but it isn’t the only one. There are twenty-three IITs, and each runs several admission streams:
- JEE Advanced — the B.Tech route, open to candidates who qualify through JEE Main and meet the attempt and age criteria.
- GATE — the main route to M.Tech and MS, and also to research positions and PSU recruitment. Many candidates who miss JEE reach an IIT this way instead.
- IIT JAM — for MSc admission, taken by science graduates.
- CSIR-NET and UGC-NET — qualifying these opens research and JRF-funded PhD positions.
- Direct PhD admission — many departments admit PhD candidates on their own written test and interview, sometimes without GATE for candidates with strong academic records.
- HSEE — for the humanities and social sciences programme at IIT Madras.
Worth saying plainly: not getting into an IIT at eighteen doesn’t close the door. A large share of IIT postgraduate students did their undergraduate degree elsewhere.
Branch or Institute? The Choice That Actually Matters
Every counselling season, the same question dominates the groups: a preferred branch at a newer IIT, or a less preferred branch at an older one. There’s no universal answer, but a few things are worth weighing honestly:
- You will study this subject for four years. Choosing a branch you have no interest in, purely for the institute name, is how people end up disengaged by second year.
- Branch change is possible but not guaranteed. Most IITs allow a change after the first year based on CGPA, with limited seats and a high cut-off. Don’t plan around it.
- Older IITs have deeper alumni networks and more established labs. That matters more for research paths than for placements.
- Placements vary more by branch than by institute in many cases, and a strong student in a smaller branch often does better than an average one in a popular branch.
- Dual degree and interdisciplinary options differ between campuses — check what’s actually offered before ranking choices.
- Visit or ask current students. The campus groups above are useful for exactly this; someone in their third year will tell you things no brochure will.
Using These Groups Well
- Post the actual problem with your working, not the topic name.
- During counselling, verify everything on JoSAA. Opening and closing rank forwards are frequently from an older year.
- Ignore rank predictions. They are guesses and they cause avoidable panic.
- Free coaching-material groups distribute pirated content, usually outdated batches that no longer match the pattern.
- Nobody can arrange an IIT seat. Admission is strictly by rank through official counselling — anyone claiming otherwise is committing fraud.
