Writing Answers the Way Boards Mark Them
Board papers are marked to a scheme, and students lose marks they’ve genuinely earned by presenting answers badly. This is the cheapest improvement available in the last month:
- Marks are awarded step by step. In maths and science, the working carries marks even if the final answer is wrong. Never write only the answer, and never rub out an attempt — a wrong-but-reasoned attempt scores more than a blank.
- Match the length to the marks. A three-mark question wants roughly three distinct points. Writing a page for it wastes time you need later in the paper.
- Underline key terms and formulas. Examiners scan for them, and they’re what the marking scheme lists.
- Diagrams get their own marks in biology, geography and physics — labelled, in pencil, with a title.
- Attempt every question. There’s no negative marking in board exams, so a blank is a guaranteed zero.
- Start with what you know best rather than question one, and number answers clearly so the examiner can follow.
- Leave ten minutes to check that you haven’t skipped a sub-part — dropped sub-questions are one of the most common avoidable losses.
The Last Thirty Days
- Stop learning new topics in the final fortnight unless a chapter carries heavy weightage. Consolidating what you half-know pays better than starting from zero.
- Solve past papers under timed conditions. Most students know the content and lose marks to pacing. You only find that out by timing yourself.
- Work from the blueprint. Boards publish chapter weightage — revise in that order rather than front to back.
- Keep a mistakes page per subject and reread only that in the last week.
- Sleep properly. Sustained sleep loss reduces recall, which defeats the point of the extra hours.
- Check the admit card and centre address well in advance, and do a trial run of the journey if the centre is unfamiliar.
