Islam in Kerala: A Long History
Kerala’s Muslim community differs from much of north India in ways that shape these groups:
- It arrived by sea, not conquest. Arab traders had established links with the Malabar coast long before Islam spread inland elsewhere in India, and the community grew through commerce and settlement. The Cheraman Juma Masjid in Kodungallur is traditionally held to be among the oldest mosques in the subcontinent.
- The Mappila community developed its own distinct culture — cuisine, architecture, music and a substantial body of literature.
- Arabi-Malayalam is a genuinely unusual thing: Malayalam written in a modified Arabic script, used for centuries to produce religious and literary works, including the Mappila songs. Some older texts and materials shared in these groups still use it.
- Religious education in Malayalam is well established through Kerala’s madrasa system, which is why Malayalam-language tafseer and lecture material is so plentiful compared with other Indian languages.
