Understanding Tamil Devotional Traditions

If you’re new to these groups, knowing which tradition a group belongs to helps you find the right one:

• Saivism — Shiva devotion, historically the dominant tradition in Tamil Nadu. The Thevaram and Thiruvasagam hymns, composed by the Nayanmar saints, are still sung daily in temples and shared constantly in these groups.
• Vaishnavism — Vishnu devotion, with the Divya Prabandham of the Alvar saints and the 108 Divya Desam temples, many of them in Tamil Nadu.
• Murugan worship — distinctly Tamil, centred on the Arupadai Veedu, the six abodes at Palani, Swamimalai, Thiruchendur, Thiruthani, Pazhamudircholai and Thiruparankundram. Thaipusam and Panguni Uthiram are the big occasions.
• The Siddhar tradition — eighteen Siddhars associated with yoga, medicine and mystical poetry. Distinct from mainstream temple worship, with its own literature and practices.
• Tamil Christianity — present since at least the Portuguese period, with a substantial Tamil hymn tradition of its own.
• Tamil Muslim communities — long-established in coastal Tamil Nadu, with Tamil-language Islamic scholarship and a distinct devotional literature.

The Festival Calendar

Group activity rises sharply around these, and coordination for temple visits and processions happens here:

• Thai Pongal — the harvest festival, January.
• Thaipusam — Murugan, with kavadi processions at Palani and elsewhere.
• Maha Shivaratri — night-long Shiva vigil.
• Panguni Uthiram — major Murugan festival.
• Chithirai — the Madurai Meenakshi temple festival, one of the largest in the state.
• Aadi — the month associated with Amman worship, with heavy temple activity.
• Karthigai Deepam — the lamp festival, particularly at Thiruvannamalai.

A Word on Paid “Vasiyam” and Remedy Services

Two groups offering vasiyam services — love-binding and control rituals — were listed on this page and have been removed. These operators charge fees to people in genuine distress: a failing marriage, an unreturned affection, a family dispute. The pattern is consistent and predatory. An initial fee is followed by claims that the ritual needs strengthening, then further payments, sometimes for years.

The same applies to anyone charging for parikaram to remove doshas, promising results in a fixed number of days, or asking for money to lift a curse. Temples and genuine practitioners do not operate that way. If you’re going through something difficult, a temple, a priest you know personally, or someone you trust is a better place to start than a paid service found in a group chat.

Group Etiquette

• Devotional groups are usually strict about off-topic posts. Political and commercial messages get members removed quickly.
• Morning volume is high — most groups fill with prayers and images before dawn. Mute and read when you can.
• Verify before forwarding temple news. Festival timings, darshan arrangements and temple announcements circulate with errors; check the temple’s own notices for anything you’re travelling for.
• Respect the tradition of the group. These are often mixed in practice but specific in focus.
• Nobody legitimate charges for prayers, blessings or remedies.
• Your phone number is visible to every member.
