Canada takes in a very large number of Indian students each year, and most arrive knowing almost nobody. University and college WhatsApp groups are where people find housing, a first job, someone to share a ride from the airport, and answers about paperwork that the official pages don’t explain well.

Before You Apply: Check the DLI Number

• You can only get a study permit for a Designated Learning Institution. Every DLI has a number, and the official list is published by the Government of Canada. Check your institution is on it before paying anything.
• Not every DLI programme qualifies for a post-graduation work permit. This catches people out badly — the institution being designated is not the same as the programme being PGWP-eligible. Confirm the specific programme before enrolling if working afterwards matters to you.
• Rules change. Study permit requirements, financial thresholds and provincial attestation requirements have all been revised in recent years. Check the IRCC website directly rather than relying on a forward or an agent’s summary.
• Verify your consultant. Only a licensed RCIC, a lawyer, or a Quebec notary can charge for immigration advice. The regulator publishes a public register — check the licence number yourself.
• No agent can guarantee a visa. That decision belongs to IRCC.

Housing: Where Most New Students Get Hurt

Rental fraud against newly arrived international students is common and well documented, because you’re booking from another country, under time pressure, with no local references.

• Never transfer a deposit for a place you or someone you trust hasn’t seen. The standard scam is photographs of a real listing, a landlord who is “abroad”, and an e-transfer request.
• Book short-term accommodation for the first two weeks and find a permanent place after you arrive. It costs more upfront and saves far more.
• Be careful with “shared room” listings that turn out to be four or six people in one room. Ask directly how many people are in the room and in the unit.
• Get a written lease. Verbal arrangements leave you with no protection, and provincial tenancy law only helps if you can show the agreement.
• Know your rights. Each province has a residential tenancies body, and international students have the same protections as anyone else.
• Use the university’s housing office and its official listings first. Student groups are useful for finding roommates, but verify everything independently.

Working While You Study

• There are limits on off-campus work hours during study terms, and these have been revised more than once recently. Check the current rule on the IRCC site — exceeding it can affect your status.
• You need a SIN to work legally. It’s free to obtain through Service Canada; nobody should charge you for it.
• Cash-in-hand work has no protection. It’s common and it’s how students get underpaid, denied hours, or dismissed without recourse.
• You are entitled to at least minimum wage for your province, whatever an employer tells you about “training rates” for newcomers.
• Keep your study permit conditions in mind — full-time enrolment is usually a requirement for off-campus work eligibility.

Using These Groups Well

• Join your institution’s group before you fly. Incoming-intake groups are where people arrange airport pickups, share housing leads and split first-month costs.
• Ask current students what the course is actually like — attendance expectations, workload, whether the co-op placement materialises.
• Verify immigration advice. Group chat is full of confident, outdated guidance. IRCC’s own pages are the only reliable source.
• Don’t share your passport, permit or financial documents in a group.
• Your phone number is visible to every member, including your country code.
• Be wary of “guaranteed job” and “PR pathway” offers posted in student groups — these target new arrivals specifically.

Feeling Isolated Is Normal

Most international students find the first few months harder than they expected — the cost, the weather, the distance from family, and often financial pressure from home. That’s a common experience, not a personal failure.

Every Canadian university and college has free counselling for enrolled students, and using it is ordinary. There are also provincial and national mental health support lines available at no cost. If things feel heavy, speak to someone early rather than waiting until it’s worse.
