Understanding Kuwait Work Visas
Knowing which visa you are being offered matters more than the salary figure, because it determines your rights:
- Article 18 — private sector work visa, sponsored by a company. This is what most overseas workers hold.
- Article 17 — government sector employment.
- Article 20 — domestic workers, governed by separate rules with different protections.
- Article 14 — dependant visa. It does not by itself permit you to work; you need a transfer to a work visa first.
Be very cautious of anyone offering to bring you in on a visit visa and “adjust it later”. Working on a visit visa is unlawful and can end in fines, deportation and a re-entry ban.
Checks Before You Pay Anyone
- Verify the recruiting agent. If you are recruited from India, the agent must hold a valid RA licence registered with the Ministry of External Affairs. Check the number on eMigrate before sending documents or money.
- Kuwait’s labour authority (PAM) regulates work permits. Ask for the sponsoring company’s name and civil ID / commercial details so you can confirm the employer actually exists.
- Get the contract in writing before travelling — job title, salary in dinars, hours, overtime, accommodation, food allowance, air ticket and contract length. A different contract presented on arrival is contract substitution and is the most common complaint in this corridor.
- Your passport stays with you. Employers retaining workers’ passports is prohibited.
- Treat “free visa” offers as a warning. The phrase generally means working without a proper sponsor, which leaves you undocumented and unprotected.
- If something goes wrong, the Indian Embassy in Kuwait operates a helpline and shelter support, and you can file a labour complaint with PAM.

Construction and oil-sector contracting dominate, which is why civil, mechanical and electrical engineers plus skilled trades — masons, tile fixers, plumbers, welders, electricians — see the most postings.
