How to Read an Assignment Abroad Times Advert
The ads are dense and abbreviated. What to look for in each one:
- The agent’s RA licence number. Genuine ads carry the recruiting agent’s registration number. No number, no application — that is the single most useful filter you have.
- Client company and country — a named employer is a much better sign than “leading MNC in Gulf”.
- Trade and quantity — e.g. “Welder 6G — 20 nos”. Large numbers usually mean a project mobilisation with genuine urgency.
- Interview date and venue. Many ads list walk-in trade tests in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai or Kochi. Turning up prepared matters more than the CV.
- Salary and benefits — check whether food, accommodation and transport are listed as free, because that changes the real value of the package considerably.
- Contract duration — usually two years for Gulf placements.
ECR and ECNR: Check Your Passport First
This catches out a lot of first-time applicants. Indian passports carry either ECR (Emigration Check Required) or ECNR (Emigration Check Not Required) status:
- ECNR applies if you have passed matriculation or higher, among other categories. You can travel for work to any country without additional emigration clearance.
- ECR applies otherwise, and means you need emigration clearance through the eMigrate system before taking up employment in certain notified countries — which includes most of the Gulf.
- If your passport is ECR, you must go through a registered recruiting agent and get clearance. Anyone telling you to skip it is putting you at risk, not saving you time.
- ECR status can be changed to ECNR by applying for passport re-issue with your educational certificates.
Spotting Fake Ads and Fake Agents
Fraudsters copy the newspaper’s layout and circulate fake pages in WhatsApp groups. Before you send documents or money:
- Verify the RA licence on eMigrate. The Ministry of External Affairs publishes the list of registered recruiting agents. If the number does not check out, it is not a real agent.
- Service charges are capped. A registered agent may charge a limited service fee, and must issue a receipt. Demands for large sums to “secure the visa” fall outside that.
- Never pay by personal UPI or to an individual’s account. Legitimate agencies invoice from a company account.
- Don’t send your original passport to an agent by courier. Submit it in person, and get an acknowledgement.
- A real interview happens. Trade tests and interviews are standard for Gulf hiring — a selection with no assessment at all should make you suspicious.
- Cross-check the ad against the official paper rather than relying on a forwarded image. Forwarded screenshots are easily edited.
