Don’t Install Modified WhatsApp Apps
This page previously carried a link recommending GB WhatsApp. It has been removed, and it’s worth explaining why, because these apps are heavily promoted in Indian group chats.
- They are not made by WhatsApp. GB WhatsApp, FM WhatsApp, YoWhatsApp and similar are unofficial clones built by third parties, distributed as APK files outside the Play Store.
- Using one breaches WhatsApp’s terms, and accounts get banned — temporarily at first, then permanently. People lose their number and chat history.
- They are a known malware route. Security researchers have repeatedly found modified WhatsApp builds containing spyware capable of reading messages, harvesting contacts and enrolling devices into paid subscriptions without consent.
- There is no security guarantee. Official WhatsApp is end-to-end encrypted; a modified client has already broken the code, and you have no idea what it does with your messages before they are sent.
- The features are not worth it. Hiding blue ticks and adding themes is not worth handing an unknown developer access to every conversation on your phone.
If you already use one, back up what you can, uninstall it, and reinstall official WhatsApp from the Play Store or App Store.
Staying Safe in Open Groups
- Your phone number is visible to every member. That is how WhatsApp groups work, and it cannot be hidden. Consider a second number for open groups.
- Lock down your profile. Settings → Privacy lets you restrict profile photo, About and Last Seen to your contacts only, so strangers in a group cannot see them.
- Ignore investment, forex, crypto and lottery posts. Several such groups were listed on this page before it was cleaned. India’s cyber crime statistics are dominated by exactly these schemes.
- Never share OTPs, Aadhaar, PAN or bank details in a group or with a contact from one, whatever reason is given.
- “Work from home, daily payment” is a task scam. A small genuine payment, then pressure to deposit your own money.
- Verify forwarded news before resharing. WhatsApp forwards are a primary misinformation channel in India, and the forwarded-message label exists for a reason.
- Report fraud on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal or by calling 1930.
How WhatsApp Groups Actually Work
- A group holds up to 1,024 members. Once full, the invite link stops working until someone leaves.
- Invite links can be revoked by any admin at any time, which is why directory links go dead. A revoked link cannot be restored — a new one has to be generated.
- Admins can restrict who posts, which is why some groups are announcement-only.
- Leaving is visible to other members; muting is not. If you want to stay without the noise, mute rather than leave.
- Communities are different from groups — a Community links several related groups under one umbrella with a shared announcement channel.
